Obituary of Lucy C. McGinnis

Lucy C. McGinnis, 92 of Jessup died Monday evening at AseraCare Hospice of the Mid-Valley Hospital. Her husband of 49 years was the late James J. McGinnis who died in October 1990. Born in Cantiano, Italy, in 1915, daughter of the late John and Cecelia Simoncelli Formica. Lucy attended Jessup Schools and graduated from Marywood College in 1937 with a degree in Education. While raising her family, she served as a substitute teacher in the Jessup Schools and later extended her career to teaching full time. She also taught at St. Claire Elementary School Scranton, before moving to the North Pocono School District where she taught at the Jefferson Elementary School in Mount Cobb and the Elmhurst Elementary School. In her quest to improve the quality of education Lucy attended many professional seminars and workshops. She particularly enjoyed the Phi Delta Kappa meetings and her affiliations with the NEA, PSEA, and NPEA. A proud naturalized American Citizen, she was active in the local Community as a volunteer for Girl Scouts, Catholic Daughters, Boy Scout and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Jessup Hose Company #1 Ladies Auxiliary, and a Charter member and first president of the Jessup Over 50 Club. Sharing a positive outlook, even during times of adversity, she found her strength in her love of Jesus and the Blessed Mother. She was a devout member of the Tri-Church Catholic Community of Jessup and Blue Army, many times hosting the Statue of Mary for prayer, in her home. Her family was honored with enthronement to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In more healthy days, Monday found her at the novena to St. Ann and in recent years she was a daily participant of mass and rosary via catholic television. As a daughter, wife, mom, grandma, great grandmother, sister, aunt or cousin Lucy's love for her family was unconditional. She had a warmth and spirit that will never be forgotten. The family wishes to thank the loving and caring nurses, staff, and volunteers of AseraCare Hospice for their support, comfort, and peace, given to Lucy, her family and friends.
