Joyce Burns

Obituary of Joyce Burns

Joyce Burns, formerly of Peckville, passed away after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born and raised in Peckville, she was the daughter of the late Leo ”Kelly” Galli and Dina Parri Galli. She was a graduate of Blakely high school class of 1965 and attended Keystone College and Bloomsburg University. Teaching was her passion, and she was exceptional at it. Her career started at the Scranton Hebrew Day School. From there, she worked in the Valley View School District teaching both 4th and 6th grades. Her commitment and drive to expect only the best of her students was instilled into everyone she had the pleasure of teaching. Many of her former students were inspired by her love and dedication to the field and were influenced to go into education as well. It is without a doubt that teaching was one of her greatest joys in life, and it will continue to shine on through the many educators she shaped today. Joyce was a woman of strong Catholic faith, which she never lost, even towards the end of her battle with her disease. She believed that in death her suffering would cease, and she would be reunited with her loved ones that passed before her. She would like to be remembered by all that knew and loved her as she was before her disease: a loving mother and grandmother, an excellent teacher, a woman dedicated to her entire family, and a loyal friend. She is survived by her sons, Jim, and wife, Lisa, of Scott Township, Jason, and wife, Tricia, of Newport, and Justin, and wife, Erica, of Roaring Brook Township; seven grandchildren, Alex, Christopher, Mallory, Logan, Emma, Noah and Madeline. She is also survived by a sister, Carol Szutowicz, Boyton Beach, Fl, nieces Mara Mooney and Amy Szutowicz, and nephews Bobby and Paul Burns. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and nurses at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, as well the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice, for the loving support and care that they provided. The funeral will be on Friday with mass of Christian burial at 10 am at Holy Cross Parish, Olyphant. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Assumption Cemetery, Montdale. Viewing hours will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8 pm at James M. Margotta Funeral, 1019 Main St. Peckville, PA.
