Obituary of James J. McKane

James J. McKane, 90, of Archbald, passed away due to ongoing health complications early March 9, 2022, 3 weeks short of his 91st birthday, at home in his sons’ arms. Born on March 28th, 1931, in Honesdale, PA, Jim was the eldest son of the late James V. McKane and Josephine Schmidt McKane. The family moved to the paternal farmstead in Pleasant Mount, where Jim graduated from Pleasant Mount High school, class of 1950. He then founded and played in numerous square-dance bands where he was a master of the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and bass. He is a veteran of the Army and served as an instructor at the Army Signal School in Fort Carson, CO. before his honorable discharge in 1962. He went on to earn both his undergraduate degree and master’s degree from the University of Scranton in 1960 and 1972, respectively. He was an engineer at Bendix Co. in Sydney, NY and at Weston, Archbald, before deciding to teach mathematics at Waymart and Valley View High Schools until his retirement (1971-1997). Jim was an avid outdoorsman, family man, daredevil, and tinker. He enjoyed sunsets on the deck of his lake house in Herrick Center and travelling with his wife, to whom he was deeply devoted, Lucille Cavalieri McKane. They shared fifty-three years of marriage. He was also a faithful member of Christ the King Parish, where he was a lector for many years. Most importantly, he was a dedicated grandfather who never missed a chance to spend time with any one of his five loving grandchildren and always attended their many events. He was deeply admired by each of them. Surviving are his two sisters, Joan Mican, Waymart, and Jane Miller, Endicott, NY, her husband Wayne, and his brother, Jerome, of Pleasant Mount, his sister-in-law Johanna Thomas, his sons, James P. McKane (Mary Therese) Archbald and Joseph K. McKane (Leigh) Fairfax Station, VA, grandchildren James P. Jr., Nathan and Noah, Archbald, and Liam and Violet, Fairfax Station, VA, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, who all loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Cavalieri McKane, infant siblings brothers Joseph and John and sister Rosemary, sister-in-law Marie Tomassoni, and brothers-in-law, Edward Mican, Foster Tomassoni, and William Thomas, a niece Heidi McKane, and great-nephew Christopher Lewis.
