Obituary of Joseph J. Berta

Joseph J. Berta of Olyphant passed away peacefully Thursday at home surrounded by his family. His wife of 34 years is the former Sandra Bious. Born in Peckville, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna Vernosky Berta. He graduated from Blakely High School and earned an Associate’s Degree in Business from Lackawanna College. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and received various awards, including the AF Commendation Medal. He was also a lifetime member of the Shopa-Davey VFW Post 6082. Joe retired from Tobyhanna Army Depot, where he worked in the Directorate of Information Management and Engineering Division. Joe was actively involved in golf, bowling, and horseshoe leagues and enjoyed playing poker and craps at Mohegan Sun Casino. He loved watching his favorite football and baseball teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Yankees. He is also survived by daughter, Nicole Berta of Olyphant; sister, JoAnn Berta of Peckville; sister Dolores Chesnaky and husband, Leonard, of Dickson City; and nephew, Leonard Chesnaky Jr. of Throop. The family would like to thank Dr. Tracey Galardi and the Visiting Nurses Association especially, Kerri and Karen, for all their care and support during these difficult times. The funeral will be held Monday with full military honors by the Shopa-Davey VFW Post 6082 from the James M. Margotta Funeral Home, 1019 Main Street, Peckville, with mass at 10 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville. Interment, St. Cyril's Cemetery, Peckville. Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 7 PM.
