Obituary of George Burak

George J. Burak, 84, of Peckville, died Monday afternoon at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. His wife is the former Mary Lou Machelli. The couple just celebrated 62 years of marriage on Sunday. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Frank and Rose Slaboda Burak. George graduated from Throop High School, class of 1954, and enlisted in the US Navy, serving during the Korean War Era. He resided the majority of his life in Peckville having moved from Harrisburg and Scranton. He was a member of the American Legion in Dickson City and an active member of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Peckville. George was employed by the US Postal Service and worked part time at Sarno and Sons after retirement. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be dearly missed. He enjoyed reading, was an excellent crossword puzzle solver, a handy man that could fix anything and an avid sports fan. "Papa" was proud of all of his grandchildren and was adored by them immensely. Also surviving are his children, Randy and wife Susan, Gloucester, VA, David, Peckville, and Kyle and wife Christina, Peckville; a sister Agnes Snell and husband John, Throop; 9 grandchildren, Kristy, Christian and wife Theresa, Lindsay, Amanda, Santina, Caroline, Emma, Gemma and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by a brother Edward, three sisters, Rose Hebden, Irene Yarem, and Ann Burak; and daughter in law, Linda Burak. The funeral will be on Saturday with mass of Christian burial at 11am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville. Entombment will follow at St. Mary’s Assumption Cemetery, Montdale.
