Obituary of Irene Zurine

Irene Zurine, 98, of Eynon, formerly of Peckville, died Saturday morning at Marywood Heights. Her Husband was Michael F. Zurine who passed away in 1979. The couple was married for 10 years. Born in Peckville, she was the daughter of the late Michael A. and Mary Maslar Estock. Irene graduated from Blakely High School and Lackawanna Junior College. She attended Penn State University and the University of Michigan to complete Management Courses. She was employed as National Director of Chapter Operations for Catholic Golden Age until 1982. She was also employed as Assistant Manager of Office Of Employment Security. She was a member of Holy Ghost Church Olyphant, where she served as a lector and eucharistic minister. She was also a lector at St. Peter’s Cathedral for 30 Years. Irene was very involved in community service. She was a founder of the Lifelong Learning Program for Seniors at Marywood University and received the Ann Thomas Award for outstanding contribution to the University. She was a member of the Scranton Business and Professional Womens for 22 years, where she served as President and Vice President for 2 years. Irene was also a member of the Peckville BPW.She was a member of the Board of Directors for United Way, Board of Directors for Meals on Wheels, the Lackawanna County Advisory Board for Children and Youth, Secretary of Business Education Committee for Scranton School District, and served on the Lackawanna County Welfare Planning Council for Social Services, A Founder of the LPN program at Lackawanna County VoTech, Member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers, and the Country Club of Scranton, she was Northeast Woman in the Scranton Times, member of the Task force at Moses Taylor Hospital for health issues regarding Seniors. Irene was involved in the Parish Visitor Associates and assisted with the arrangements when Mother Theresa visited Scranton.. She was integral to the RCIA program, which sponsored adults wishing to become Catholic. She enjoyed travelling on her own and with her husband. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart. Surviving are an adopted son, Father Thomas Augustine Desam, India, who was the assistant pastor at St. Mary’s Mt. Carmel, Dunmore; a niece and her caretaker, Joan Kryzanowski, Peckville; several grandnieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Estock Kryzanowski and a brother Edward Estock. The Funeral will be on Thursday with mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Holy Cross Parish, Olyphant. Interment will be on Friday at 9:30 am at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Carbondale. There will be a 1 hour viewing in the Church from 9-10 am. Arrangements are under the care and direction of James M. Margotta Funeral Home.
