Gerard Coury

Obituary of Gerard A. Coury

Gerard (“Jerry”) A. Coury, 71, of Peckville, passed away on June 18th at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Gerard passed away after a long and courageous battle with cardiomyopathy. Gerard is survived by his devoted wife, the former Patricia Leonard. The couple would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on June 24th. Gerard was born in Scranton and was the son of the late Mansore and Loretta Hibye Coury. Gerard graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in West Scranton and obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Scranton. Gerard was a legend, a fighter. He was an avid Yankees and New York Giants fan. He was a devoted father, the best grandpa and a loving husband. The loudest person in the room, he always spoke his mind. If he liked you, you knew it. If he didn’t like you, you also knew it. He was larger than life. Most importantly, he was our superhero. For almost twenty years, he battled a failing heart. His condition was ironic as he had the biggest heart out of anyone. He spent his career helping others as a social worker until his retirement due to his illness. He also dedicated his time and effort to raising money for children with cystic fibrosis. Despite his serious condition and like the superhero he was, he traveled to Disney and South Carolina for his grandchildren, golfed, yelled at the Yankees and Giants for making terrible plays, babysat his grandchildren, took his wife out to dinner every Saturday night, never missed his twin grandchildren's baseball games and remained feisty. Our superhero has now become our angel. Also surviving are his children; Dr. Jeffrey Coury and wife Caryn, South Carolina and Atty. Christina Zielinski and husband Mark, Olyphant; his grandchildren, Alyssa and Kamryn Coury and Myla and Brody Zielinski; mother-in-law, Martina Leonard, Scranton; two sisters, Mary Anne Vrabel, Florida and Marcia Heckel, New York; sisters-in-laws; brothers-in-laws; nieces; nephews; and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Coury; nephew, Patrick Kennedy; niece, Jennifer Laytos; and brother-in-law, Roger Leonard. The family would like to thank the physicians and nurses at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, especially Dr. Joyce Wald and the nurses of the LVAD Clinic, Janelle and Kristy, and his family physician, Dr. Rajan Mulloth. The funeral will be on Saturday with mass of Christian burial at 10 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Peckville. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Saturday, 9 am until funeral services at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org) or St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen (St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen (stfranciskitchen.org).
