Obituary of Donald J. Whalen

Donald J. Whalen, 87, died peacefully at his home in Waverly on March 4, born and raised in North Scranton, the son of the late Dennis and Anna Sweeney Whalen, he was educated at Holy Rosary School, then went on to graduate from the University of Scranton. He received a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from Penn State University and also attended Lehigh University for post graduate work. Don was employed by the PA Department of Health as a psychologist at Clarks Summit State Hospital- a position he held for thirty-four years. He was also employed for many years as an Adjunct Instructor in Psychology at the University of Scranton. Don is survived by his wife, Claire, whose life he enriched beyond measure. He is mourned by family and friends who will remember him as a man of intellect, good taste and gentle humor. God bless his elegant soul. The family wishes to convey their gratitude to the staff of VNA Hospice & Home Health for their exemplary care and support, and to the wonderful women - Kelly, Trish, Ann Marie and Marla- who cared for Don so gently during his final months.
