Obituary of John Bohenek
John M. Bohenek Jr., 72, of West Pittston, died Monday afternoon at Geisinger CMC after a courageous battle against cancer.
Born in Peckville, John was the son of the late John Sr. and Veronica Banfi Bohenek.
John graduated from Jessup High School in 1964 and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of Sergeant while being deployed to South Korea during the Vietnam Era. John was honorably discharged in 1967 and then went to work for Tobyhanna Army Depot as a welder for two years.
In 1970, John enlisted in the PA State Police and was a twenty five year veteran. He served at various locations throughout the state, his last duty assignment being at the Blooming Grove barracks in Pike County.
John loved his children to whom he was extremely generous and dedicated. John loved to watch his two favorite professional teams which were the Phila. Phillies and the Dallas Cowboys. John had an outgoing and friendly personality who will be missed by everyone who knew him.
In 2010, John was diagnosed with End-stage Kidney failure and was told he would have to get a kidney transplant or go on dialysis. When Joseph heard this, without any hesitation on his part, he told his dad he’s going down to Geisinger Hospital, Wilkes-Barre to get tested to see if he’s an eligible match to donate a kidney to his Dad.
Joseph was told he was a perfect match and on Oct. 28, 2010, Joseph and his dad underwent a successful kidney transplant operation. Joseph had just donated a healthy kidney to his dad and had given him a second chance at a normal life.
John is survived by his sons; Thomas and Michael, both of Dunmore and Joseph and wife Alyssa, Archbald; two sisters, Andrea Nedorostek and husband Michael, Jessup and Rose Walton, Scott Twp.; a brother Thomas Bohenek and wife Debbie, Olyphant.
John always considered himself blessed to have such a wonderful son like Joseph. John was always forever grateful to Joseph. He also felt very blessed to have two wonderful sisters, Andrea and Rose, who along with Joseph and his wife Alyssa, were always there for him.
The funeral will be on Saturday with mass of Christian burial at 10 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Peckville. Interment will follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery, Jessup.
