Obituary of Helen Marie Mooney

Helen Marie Mooney, 83, of Olyphant died peacefully Monday at Sacred Heart Hospice Dunmore after a brief illness.


Born in Olyphant, daughter of the late Dr. Joseph and Clare Kelly Mooney, she was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, Olyphant.   She received a Bachelor and Masters Degree from Marywood University college of Health and Human Services.  She taught Home Economics at Susquehanna Valley Junior High School, Conklin, New York for over thirty years.  Helen retired as Department Chairperson in 1990.


Helen was a lifetime member of Holy Cross, formerly Saint Patrick’s Church, Olyphant where she served as a lector for 20 years.  Her Catholic faith was paramount in her life and she was guided and greatly comforted by Monsignor Muldowney.  She enjoyed her trips with members of her faith community to the far corners of the world.


Above everything was her family.  She had a huge heart and gave generously to everyone.  She cared for her sisters during extended illnesses.  She enjoyed baking and sewing for her family.  She especially loved her nieces and nephew whom she treated as her children.


Surviving are a nephew, John J. Mooney and wife Jean, six nieces, Marybeth Broderick and husband John, Susan Dolderer and husband Michael, Judy Mooney, Kelly Tague and husband Vincent Jr., Karen Del Vescovo and husband Anthony and Amiee Mooney, a sister in law, Betsy Mooney; 12 grand nieces and grand nephews.


She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lt. Col. Gertrude, Mary Clare, and Ann Mooney, a brother John T. Mooney.


The funeral will be on Saturday with mass of Christian burial at 9:30 am at St. Patrick’s Church, Olyphant. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 7 pm at the Louis M. Margotta Funeral Home, 511 Church St., Jessup.
